Havildar Lachhiman Gurung VC was a Nepali-born soldier of the British Indian Army who received the Victoria Cross — the highest military decoration for valour — for his extraordinary bravery during World War II. Despite losing his right hand to a grenade, he fought off an entire Japanese company single-handedly.
